Early research showing efficacy of Entomol’s active ingredient, hydrogenated catmint oil, against ticks was published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature some time back (https://academic.oup.com/jme/article/46/4/832/938919). Entomol more recently commissioned research at a well-regarded contract research laboratory (https://www.carroll-loye.com/) to test our formulations of this ingredient.
In tests measuring willingness to climb through a treated area of skin, nipt! proved to be a clearly effective repellent. We tested our new product line, nipt! Bayou, containing HCO at 15%, against two species of disease-carrying ticks. The lone star tick (Amblyomma americana), is widely distributed in the east, southeast and midwest, and is a vector of ehrlichiosis and tularemia. Its bite is also causative of the alpha-gal meat allergy. The deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), present throughout the east, can carry a number of human pathogens, most notably lyme disease.
